She was built 9 years after Runa VI, by Carl Madsen, Gudhjem, Bornholm in 1936. Frigg may be set apart from her siblings in that she was built for a customer and not for Rønne personally, although that's to be confirmed.Gileshghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15266098893704098078noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6723773493605094185.post-76247691337709587442011-04-19T19:05:00.000+02:002011-04-19T19:05:20.546+02:00Caulking the Deck - Runa IV

Chantier du Guip are currently working on the deck and the interior of Runa IV whilst her rig is prepared by a local rigger. Her stays are to be galvanised, as they were in 1918, wheras her deck is to be furnished with polished bronze.

Interview with the famous constructor of Runa boats, architect Gerhard Rønne.

Seamanship has great value that I think as many people as possible should sail

Architect Gerhard Rønne’s Runa boats have a certain ring to them amongst cruiser sailors. These boats were built by the architect with the express purpose of sea passage in mind. Every voyage was meticulously prepared. Gratitude is owed to Rønne for always having honoured seamanship, foreign harbours and by the manner in which he did this, generating respect for old Denmark’s flag.

When one tells of his voyages, every genuine sailor listens attentively and with envy to the joy that emanates from his accounts, these brilliantly interesting experiences, whether they be from the North Sea, Skagerak, the Baltic, Bottenhavet or from the Finnish Archipelago.

We find the architect in his peaceful home, where everything bears witness to chosen taste, right from the antique furniture to the maritime images from great grandfather’s days.
In my youth, I sailed a lot of races, from 1896 as a member of Copenhagen Amateur Sailing Club and then the following year, the Royal Danish Yacht Club. But Cruiser Sailing was my real pastime.

The cockpit was self bailing, which probably isn’t modern anymore, but from my experience, having had waves come headlong over the deck during my youth, I consider it necessary for a sea going boat to have either a self bailing or closed cockpit. The roof was comparatively small, in order that there be space for a small dinghy on the deck, and the rig was particularly sturdily dimensioned.

- Why are the boats called Runa?

- That was a name I found!

Sailing the archipelagos is something in its own right. First and foremost for the nature, but be aware, think fast, act fast; mistakes are not to be made here! One year we were up in the finnish islands and it blew up a storm with a nasty fog. Due to the Aalands islands’ geographical situation, they often have stormy, foggy weather. Just as we were looking for our anchorage, the fog came upon us. We had luckily just taken the bearing of an opening between two cliffs, because a moment later and it was so thick it was impossible to orientate oneself. Anyway, the anchor fell as designed, although had the fog fallen ten minutes before, we’d have been obliged to keep moving on between the islands, a serious situation. Time to time it takes a little luck just at the critical moment.

Another time we found ourselves in a thunderstorm in the Swedish islands south of Vestervik and we had to drop the sails and run with it. The islands lay about us in every direction and it rained. It was very uncomfortable. We were just about to enter a channel but noticed fortunately a reef before us… in distress we scraped through, crossing from shoreline to shoreline. The islands are one thing; the sea is something else.

- What do you think of sailing today?

- Since my youth, sailing has advanced with huge strides. A greater number of people participate today, but it seems as though some of the festivity has been lost. For example, it was an impressive spectacle to watch, at the Kieler races the great Schooners of various nationalities fighting it out over the cup. All that’s changed, I guess due to democracy. Back then there were rich people. Perhaps cars have influenced that aspect of sailing; on the other hand, there are many more skilled sailors with smaller boats. And today we sail about spending holidays with the whole family. This is absolutely an important step forward.

He drew long lines with large overhangs, which gave a longer and therefore faster waterline when heeled over.

‘Gloriana’, the first of that boat type was born; a 46ft cutter. The boat beat all competitors and the idea quickly formed the basis for the entire school of yacht design for the next 80 years. Also in Denmark the ingenious new design was plagiarized. Newer and more complicated restrictions were introduced to create better race equality and more seaworthy and spacious boats.

After numerous more or less failed rules, the ‘Copenhagen rule’ was formed in 1898, partly or entirely by Alfred Benzon. The measurement rule was called ‘sail length’ (SL) and from this category many good boats were created, although it was quickly pushed to the extremes. The basic grounding of the rule was correct in that larger sail areas and a longer waterline was penalized.

……

The international Meter R Boats

This meter rule came about after a meeting in London in 1906, because it seemed an obvious development to get all the sailing nations to sail under the same criteria. In this way all boats could sail against one another despite the national boundaries. At the same time, it was hoped to bring more local rules to life as they didn’t seem to give particularly seaworthy of spacious vessels.

Many designers immediately began to draw along these lines, following the complicated formula that contained many of the boat’s dimensions, which after calculations should arrive at the number 6, for the six meter rule. The other classes were 5,7,8,9,10,12,15,19 and 23 meter R (R representing Rating).

Evidently, the numbers have nothing to do with the boat lengths. In Denmark it was more than any others the 6,7 and 8 meters that found a firm footing.

As usual, the system came to be used for purposes other than those intended. After WW1 the rule was changed for the improved in 1919, and there was actually a sensible Meter boat created to the pleasure of international racing.

As the north was not implicated in the war and the political leaders driving the war didn’t exactly have yacht racing on the mind, we [the Danes] changed the old rule of 1906 ourselves for that which we called the ‘S Rule’ in 1918. The aforementioned R rule of 1919 came to resemble the S rule so much that the Nordic initiative was dropped just as fast as it came about.

They had to live with the fact a trip around the island of Fyn wasn’t going to happen and that a longer voyage was impossible. In 1910, Gerhard Roenne sailed a notable passage to England with his 7m Runa II (the is no boat of this name, it was either Runa I or Ran II). Accompanied by two friends, he managed to get to Yarmouth and back during his 3 week summer holiday, despite adverse weather conditions. The trip was made possible by the opening of the Kaiser Wilhelm Kanal in 1895 between Kiel and Elbe (Kieler Kanalen). Sailing vessels were pulled through the canal by a steam tug, which opened significant new possibilities for Danish cruisers. Normal cruisers would not venture anywhere near as far afield, but Gerhard Roenne’s advances were not to be ignored. Particularly that such a small sailboat could enable its owner with such possibilities. As he himself wrote, “cruising has therefore only enforced our opinion that one can safely bring oneself out upon the open seas in a small vessel, when it is built and trimmed for that purpose”.

Gerhard Roenne and engineer Knud Degn drew the boats themselves, and during the winter of 1909-10 they had one built each by N.H. Nielsen in Skovshoved. That they were two 7 meter boats – Knud Degn’s became called Ran II – should not be understood to mean that they intended to race. The R rule was simply so new that it was still believed to contribute to a seaworthy, healthy boat. Again in 1912, Gehard Roenne built a boat, this time alongside Henry P. Lading. Just before the war broke out, they were on a passage to Stockholm. Here we see them ready to go in the spring of 1912, and it can be seen that the launch is effected without a cart/trailer. Runa III is just suppoted by a couple of sticks that are removed when the boat is launched into her element, joining her sister. Glide would be a more appropriate description of the launch, in that the keel is greased so that the boat slides down the slip. The balance is kept by using long ropes tied to the mast. This simple method was used by many yards but required experienced hands to guide the ropes.

Ran II is a distinct classic, one of the eldest Danish yacht constructions and is a 7m R Cruiser.

The boat is fast and lightly clothed/easily sailed (not sure which, although easily sailed seems more probable, given the context) built for fast cruising and holiday trips. Therefore she is relatively sturdy in her construction with close frames. Strength was placed before greater boat speed, which may have been achieved with a lighter build. Had she been built for speed and not cruising, she would have been two or three meters longer and slighter. There is a semi-flush deck with standing height in the roof. The boat is still, even at 90 [Ran II was built in 1910] one of the fastest about, both in light and stronger winds, on a beat or a run.

The association with the meter rule represents purely a desire to back the brand new R rule of 1906.

The architect Gerhard Rønne was a passionate sailor. As early as 1910 he sailed to England during his three week holiday.

A cruising pioneer

Today the name Gerhard Rønne has little meaning to most sailors, but during the years between the two world wars, he was known and admired for his accounts of his long distance passages. Once, when it was seen as good going to reach Laesø or Skagen on a summer cruise, Rønne sailed a long way up the gulf of Bothnia, to the West coast of Norway or the English Channel, each and every time within his allocated three week holiday and in a boat of his own construction. Not only as a sailor, but also as a constructor of small cruisers was Rønne regarded as a pioneer.

The architect Gerhard Rønne was from Copenhagen and probably lived his whole life on Østerbro. We don’t have his precise birth date and other information, but he must have been born around 1880, maybe before, and died in the late 1950s. In an article in the ‘Viking’ from 1936 he tells that “already as a small boy I loved the sea”. In the beginning he sailed mainly small dinghies and at fifteen he had a small Kragjolle, which he used mainly for racing.

As a student architect at the turn of the century, there wasn’t the possibility of anything as extravagant as a summer holiday

“but when I was finished studying and could take two or three weeks annual holiday, it was long distance cruising that occupied entirely my interest for sailing”.

As an architect with a studio, Rønne was responsible for the creation of the Shellhus in Copenhagen’s city square. As a boat constructor, he managed six solidly built and very seaworthy cutters. None of his stories of sailing in the old Sejlsport or any other magazine tell of any serious losses, despite the fact that Rønne never skimped on materials.

This account we’ve chosen to bring to you, concerns Rønne’s first passage over the North Sea with Runa I in 1910. There were only three weeks available and with particularly bad weather, a lot more time was spent at sea than on land. Runa I still exists today and has a berth in Skovshoved, whilst her sister ship, Ran II is to be found at Grenå.

Knew Alfred Benzon

Runa II as far as we know was built in collaboration with the pharmacist and constructor Alfred Benzon, whom Rønne came to know through the Royal Danish Yacht Club. Runa III is today in Svanemøllen Harbour while a sister ship belongs in Marbaek harbor near Frederikssund. Runa IV is today known as Runi of Svanemeollen, whereas Runa V’s home is unknown. The last in the rack, Runa VI was sold after WW2, like so many good boats to the USA, where she still sails. A couple of years ago the owner wrote to Denmark looking for information regarding the constructor. Runa VI is also mentioned in an article from 1936 where Gerhard Rønne tells of that just like her predecessors, Runa VI was built with a gaff rig.

“Some years ago I re-rigged her as a moderate bermuda and haven’t had any reason to regret it. Regarding the interior design I will just say that in a cutter of her size, it’s practical to have the supplies just below the main hatch so one can get a bite to eat even in bad weather.”

Headroom, toilet and other such things that today one would expect from such a boat, Rønne never managed to experience. All of his boats were relatively low in their freeboard and had elegant, flat roofs that allowed waves to wash unimpeded over, but on the other hand didn’t give much more space within than that which the hull made room for.

The trips took place together with two or three friends. Mrs Rønne is never mentioned, so she must have stayed home or holidayed elsewhere. In one article, Rønne remarks that if the time aboard inconvenienced anyone, he hired an experienced sailor.

That was then. Today a cruise would be different than when in 1910 Gerhard Rønne sailed to England, but the experience is thankfully unchanged. A voyage to England on one’s own keel was one of the subjects that interested us most when we discussed Deep sea cruising. The 7-meter Runa was built with that specific objective in mind. There was paid particular attention to seaworthiness; the boat was equipped with a very small roof and cockpit, low and solid rig, storm sail, broad jib, sea anchor, oil bag etc. in brief, a real cruiser based on navigation in open water.

There was a lot to take care of. The trip had to be done within our three-week holiday, so one was became quickly aware of the fact that one of the first conditions for a successful voyage would be luck with the wind and from the first day. Later, when the departure date got closer, the rush became considerable, there were long lists of waters, sea charts, a current charts etc., the list of provisions was also extensive. The skipper’s navigational skills got a good going over with the sailing instructor Funder, whom he often sent a friendly thought, when later sat calculating rations in the small cabin. R. was skipper, T. helmsman and J. was the chef.

Departure was set for Saturday afternoon on the 18th of June, but it was evening before we were finished with the stowing of supplies and equipment. At 1?.25 we cast off and headed out of Kronløbet. With a fresh Northerly we stood away and out of Kongedypet and Drogden, using lighthouses and lightships against our bearings for the last compass correction. Then there followed a great crossing over Køgebugt with a clear sky and a fresh wind.

Sunday the 19th at 03.00 we passed Stevn Lighthouse and at 05.15 Bøgestrøm buoy. At 08.00 we anchored at Peter’s Yard, but our little anchor didn’t hold and before we had time to drop the big one, we drifted aground. We were quickly afloat again, and lunch tasted twice as good after our healthy warning.

11.00 we heaved the anchor and beat up to Masnedø. It blew hard from the North West and although there were five reefs on the boom, Runa lay low under the gusts. 14.30 we came into Mesnedø harbor where the captain’s brother, having joined us until here, alighted. We anchored in the middle of the harbour and went below for a cup of tea before saying farewell.

All of a sudden, we felt a shock. Our sea anchor (small anchor I think he means) had again failed us and a gust of wind had landed Runa on top of the underwater remains of an old quay. So we tried all kinds of tricks to get free but without success. The general mood aboard fell to rock bottom; we had better things to spend our time doing than standing aground in Masnedø harbour. Eventually we came up with the idea of going aboard the steam ferry and asking the skipper to help us with his winch. Our request was met with great compassion and a line was soon passed to Runa, the winch started and in no time we were again ready for new adventures. After that episode, our little anchor was abandoned and we only used the large one.

16.40 we were outbound again; at Tokosten[1] outside Dyrfod Flak[2] we wrote the log. 17.30 was a wet beat up to Vejrø in a fresh gale and the sea head-on; conditions only Smålandshavet can produce. 21.10 we passed Vejrø Flak and set our heading for Tranekaer. We had a pleasant sail over to Langland where after we followed the coast down.
Monday the 20th 0100 we passed Kelsnor Lighthouse. Heading South West to West after Bülk. Still fresh wind from the North West but it had eased enough to let out a couple of reefs. 0600 we passed Bülk and at 07.15 anchored at Holtenau to register ourselves for the canal passage. The papers were easily dealt with thanks to an agent who gave us the comforting news that it would only cost 15 mark. Although that was the only pleasant surprise during the passage through the canal except for the pleasant landscapes we passed.
There were already quite a few small sailing vessels waiting and we were organized into two lines. At 10.00 the steamer came and pulled away with us in tow. The morning was spent in the bunks or on the deck under the burning sunshine. All the clothing, wet from the earlier, was quickly dried, whilst at the same time, the unfortunate helmsman was baked.

There were many quite lovely places along the canal, particularly nearing Rensborg where the canal is surrounded by terrain partially covered by forest. The tug stopped every time it passed another large steamer and we had to moor up to posts while it passed. We had to we well tied up as the waves were violent and we struggled to keep ourselves away from the moorings and the other boats, which were more capable of taking a beating.
Gerhard Peter Rønne - Danish architect born before the turn of the twentieth century. Originally a furniture maker by trade, like his father. He later went on top study architecture at the royal danish academy for arts. Rønne became known for pioneering longer distance trips in smaller boats. His tours to England in his cutters were unusual in their distance, and as he explained in an interview, only possible in the short time allocated thanks to the Kiel Canal, or Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal as it was then known. His exploits were mostly realised during the three weeks of summer holiday he allowed himself. During these three weeks, along with his crew, he managed the crossing getting back in tilme to continue his work.
The inspiration behind the designs he claimed was the voyage from Norway in Ran I. Alongside his colleage/friend Knud Degn, he drew Ran II and Runa, both built in 1910 by Brothers Neilson in Skovshoved. Ran II was for Degn, Runa for Rønne. There may have been assistance given by engineer Alfred Benzon at some point throughout the drawing of the 8 boats of which I have records.

The Royal Danish Yacht Club seems to have been a meeting point for Rønne and his associates.
Runa IV is currently undergoing work in Brest, France. She appears to have been rigged as a yawl, either at birth, or at least before 1920. In this respect, as well as her size, she sets herself apart from her siblings. In 1937 it is known there was a swedish Albin inboard motor in her, although I don't know whether or not this too was a later modification.
From 1937 until 2009 she lay in or around San Francisco I believe, where she raced until at least 2008. Although it is likely she was rigged as a gaff yawl in 1918, with or without her mizzen, in 2009 she had been rerigged as a marconi sloop, her bow sprit absent.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12pt;">
The wonderful Kongelig Dansk Yachtklub have sent copies of their year books where we can read about the boats and their rigs. (below)
She was built the same year as Runa IV, 1918 by thye yard Hellerup, not far from Skovshoved. They appear to have been competitors, Skovshoved eventually succeeding Hellerup yard, which was later destroyed. Ehly no longer exists but on paper.
